Soft Hackamore
Halter and Standard Lead    Halter and Mecate Rein
Using the Halter and Mecate as a Soft Hackamore
Setting up the Soft Hackamore with a Mecate Rein
  • Thread about six inches of one end of the Mecate from back to front between the side pieces of the halter just above the fiador knot.
(Note: The stiff section at the end of the Mecate does not bend enough to be incorporated into the knot.)
  • Coil the Mecate upward and clockwise around all four sections of the halter.  Make two coils.
  • Thread a doubled over section of the Mecate from front to back between the side pieces of the halter above the coil you just made.  Pull through a loop about ten feet in length.
(Note: The doubled over section becomes the reins.)
  • Pass the remaining end of the Mecate clockwise around behind the halter above the coil.
  • Bring  the remaining end of the Mecate clockwise around in front of  the halter above the coil.
  • Thread the remaining end of the Mecate from bottom to top through the left side of the last coil you just created and out through the back of the halter where the reins come out.
  • Pull all the sections tight and push the top of the knot down as you tighten to make it as compact as possible.
  • The short end should be coming out the front and the reins and lead should be coming out the back.
