Traditional mecate reins are made from horse hair. Some trainers prefer the horse hair mecate for the following reasons:

1. Horses respond to the feel of the horse hair on their necks. Teaching a horse to neck rein is significantly faster with horse hair mecate reins than with traditional reins.

2. Horse hair looks good on horses because its natural colors blend well with horse colors.
